The Way It All Began
Introduction
LJD Corporation is an accredited social enterprise based in Sabah, Malaysia, the country's most economically challenged state. Our core mission revolves around transforming plastic waste, which can take up to 500 years to decompose, into innovative tourism products. We strive to mitigate the environmental impact of plastic waste while driving socio-economic development in Sabah.
At the heart of our efforts is the Kayu Madang landfill, a site rapidly approaching full capacity. By converting waste into valuable products, we create sustainable solutions that address both environmental and socio-economic challenges. Our tourism products, made by the marginalised community, include recycled plastic accessories, handbags, and sustainable fashion items featuring traditional Sabahan motifs. These products not only reduce the environmental burden but also support local artisans and promote ethical consumerism.
LJD Corporation is also involved in land restoration through recycling and upcycling at Kayu Madang landfill. This comprehensive land restoration project is carried out by scavengers, whom LJD Corporation compensates for their work. Our efforts aim to transform the site into a sustainable and thriving ecosystem by implementing advanced techniques to rehabilitate waste areas, planting native tree species, engaging and educating the local community, and developing infrastructure for sustainable waste segregation and recycling processes.
We operate from two locations: one at the Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre's Makerspace, which is 3666 sq feet in size, and another currently being developed as a mini recycling centre at Kampung Kepayan Baru. The mini recycling centre will benefit the villagers of Kampung Kepayan Baru, who suffer from dengue and are impacted by open burning. By empowering these villagers through recycling and upcycling initiatives, we help them generate income by creating LJD tourism products.
